3. Purity & Proof Levels

Ethanol is typically listed by its “proof” or volume percentage (viv):

§  200 Proof (Absolute/Anhydrous);

>_ 99.5% ethanol. It is “water-free” and hygroscopic (absorbs water from the air).

§  190 Proof: 95% ethanol. This is the highest purity achievable via simple distillation (the azeotropic point).

§  70% Ethanol: The standard concentration for disinfection and surface sterilization.

4. Formulations: Pure vs. Denatured

This is a vital distinction for tax and safety purposes:

§  Pure (Undenatured): Ethanol with no additives. Often requires a permit (Liquor Tax) because it is technically “drinkable”

§  Denatured: Ethanol mixed with small amounts of additives (like Methanol, isopropanol, or MIBK) to make it toxic and exempt from beverage taxes.
